Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started with an appointment?

I like to visit with my clients by phone before we engage in a therapeutic relationship. I’d like to spend about fifteen to twenty minutes getting to know each other so that we can both determine if this is the best fit. This phone conversation is free of charge. Please contact my office via e-mail chris@beginningchange.com to set up a phone consultation.

Yes, your therapy sessions are confidential and are protected under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. You may sign a written release of information to allow certain individuals specific information as it relates to your therapy such as attendance. There are limitations to this privacy and if there is a legitimate threat to yourself or others, or abuse or neglect of a child, elderly, or someone mentally incapable of caring for their self then I am required by law to contact the appropriate agency. If you are involved in a legal proceeding that is related to your therapy, there is potential that a judge may request my appearance in court to testify.

Most therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length and occur once a week. Brief therapy is described as 10 to 12 sessions, however the number of sessions you participate in is determined by your goals and your progress toward those goals. Sometimes new goals develop as you participate in sessions. This might mean that you decide to continue with therapy even after your original goals are met. There is not a perfect number of sessions that fits all clients so we will tailor that number to what you feel works best for you and helps you meet your goals in a timely manner. I don’t feel that anyone should feel like they must be in therapy for the rest of their lives. I strive to help you meet all of your goals in as few sessions as possible.

I typically work with adults of all age ranges, however consideration to working with children will be given if there is signed parental consent.

I am happy to help you satisfy your needs as they relate to the legal system. We will need to have a signed release of information form that allows me to report attendance to the appropriate agency.
